Wine & Spirits 92 points
"Jerome Quiot of Domaine du Vieux Lazaret in Chateauneuf took over this estate from the Duclaux family in 1987. Now his children, Florence and Jean-Baptiste, farm its 30 acres, most of it mixed plantings of vines nearing 100 years old. This wine, predominantly grenache and mourvedre with a host of other varieties, is fermented with some stems in cement vats, then aged in a mix of cement and oak barrels. Itís a seductive wine, juicy and lush with violet-scented berry fruit. Notes of leather and spice attest to its age, but the taut acidity keeps the wine feeling uncannily fresh and lifted, an elegant Chateauneuf for roast game birds. (Oct 2018)
The nose is warm and beginning to show an attractive complexity characterized by understated red fruits and spice along with leather and tertiary notes. The palate is nicely developed and together, with an appealing mix of red cherry and spice notes. There is a fine, balanced structure. An elegant, not heavyweight style expressing Cinsault and Grenache in particular, with the emphasis on finesse rather than power.
