Considered by many as the jewel in the Port Wine crown, this is the only Port that ages in bottle. Produced from the grapes harvested during a single year and bottled two to three years after the vintage, it develops gradually for 5 to 50 years before it is drunk.
The grapes are selected from the best qualities and submitted to a strong maceration in order to get a wine with the necessary characteristics for a “Vintage“: intense, rich and colorful.
To obtain the wine with natural sugar, fermentation is stopped by adding a certain quantity of grape spirit.
Since the characteristics may deserve the designation, the wine must be bottled between the second and the third year of age, maturing henceforth in the bottle.
Intense and deep color, very fresh aromas of basil and orange flower, red currant and blackberry. When tasting, the intensity and quality of the flavors stands out. The palate becomes full with the wine structure; very intense, showing ripe fruit and a smooth palate.
good soft tannins on the finish with the aromas prevailing forever.
The Vintage Ports are matured in bottle and, with the age, get some sediments. It is necessary to decant the wine before serving. It is advisable to put the bottle standing up, some 12 to 24 hours before carefully the decanting.
They accompany very well strong cheeses or chocolate deserts.
